Photograph ID will be required to enter the meeting. The meeting is strictly for Tottenham Labour party members.
Tottenham has a long tradition of fighting for equality and social justice. For centuries we have seen people from Tottenham lead fights to make our community and society a better place. Today, over 2,800 of Tottenham’s people are members of the Labour party and they bring with them that same passion to fight for equality and social justice.
As the Tottenham Labour Party Executive Officers we understand from listening to our members that there is not a consensus about Gender Self ID. We believe both those who agree and disagree with this policy sincerely have the understanding that they are fighting for equality and social justice.
When you elected us on the Executive Committee as Officers, we understood that we had taken on the responsibility to ensure our members have the space to debate their ideas, beliefs and policies to progress society.
We acknowledge there will be times our members will not agree and some of these debates will be difficult, but we believe everyone should be heard and given the opportunity to express their views if they believe they are fighting for equality and social justice.
We strongly believe avoiding debate and not enabling discussion can build resentment, frustration and create further division, and that this will not benefit anyone in the long term.
We would like to thank members who have views either for or against Gender Self ID for the mature way they have approached and conducted themselves over the past few months. We absolutely acknowledge that some of you feel strongly about this subject but are conscious you do not wish to disrespect or upset your fellow comrades.
We fully recognise and accept we have to take some leadership and not shy away from our responsibility to maintain good relations among members, no matter how complex the issues maybe.
Therefore, to move forward, we have invited members of the NEC to attend a special meeting in May 2018. This is an opportunity for members to fully understand the party’s position/plans, how and why they reached/are reaching their decision, the factors they took/are taking on board, what this means in reality and for you to share your concerns and/or support.
We appreciate this might be a passionate meeting, but we are confident that our members can have this discussion in a mature, respectful and supportive way.
We are glad that NEC Members Jon Lansman and Alice Perry have accepted our invitation and a meeting will take place on Wednesday 16th May 2018 7:30pm .This meeting will be for Tottenham Labour Party members only and will be chaired by David Lammy MP (subject to Parliamentary whip/votes)
